Being self-employed means you can set your own schedule and be your own boss. But it also means that you may need to find your own health or dental insurance. Access Health CT (AHCT) is here to help you get the coverage you need.

Understanding insurance options

If you’re self-employed, you may qualify for health or dental insurance through AHCT. You may even be able to get financial help to lower your monthly costs. Here is what’s available:

  • Health Plans: These plans are offered by major insurance companies and certified by Access Health CT. They cover Essential Health Benefits like doctor’s visits, hospital stays and prescriptions. You’ll want to pay attention to:
    • how much the plan costs each month (the premium).
    • how much you have to pay before your coverage starts (the deductible).
    • how much you have to pay when you use your plan (copayments and coinsurance).
  • Dental Plans: These are separate plans you can enroll in to help cover dental services like cleanings and fillings. They are available for you or your family. You can enroll in one with or without a health plan through Access Health CT. You can also use these plans with Medicare.
  • Covered CT Program: This program offers free health and dental insurance to those who qualify. You need to meet certain income requirements, enroll in a Silver Plan and be eligible for and use the entire Advanced Premium Tax Credit available to you from the federal government. Learn more about the Covered CT Program.
  • HUSKY Health: This is Connecticut’s Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). If you meet the requirements, you may be able to choose low-cost or free coverage through HUSKY Health.

We can help you figure out what health plans or programs you qualify for. When you apply, you’ll need to provide information about your household income and size. This will help determine your eligibility and if you can get financial help.

How to enroll

You can enroll in a health or dental plan during the annual Open Enrollment Period, which starts October 23, 2026, and runs through January 15, 2027. You may be able to enroll at another time of the year if you lose your coverage or have a major life change, like getting married, having a baby or moving to Connecticut. If that happens you may qualify a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). If you are eligible for HUSKY Health or the Covered CT Program, or are an American Indian or Alaska Native, you can enroll at any time.
